On September 11, a delegation led by Turkhan, Turkeys Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, visited the Southwest Jiaotong University and witnessed the wind tunnel test of the 1915 Canakkale Bridge at the Wind Engineering Experimental Research Center.

It is reported that the 1915 Canakkale Bridge in Turkey will be built over the Dardanelle Strait at the southern end of the Turkish Straits. Upon completion, it will become another important land route connecting Europe and Asia. The bridge is a large suspension bridge with a span of 770m 2023m 770m. After completion, the bridge will surpass the Japan Akashi Kaikyo Bridge (the main span of 1991 meters) and break the world record of bridge span. The Turkish government requires the bridge to be opened to traffic in 2023, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey. In March of this year, through the international bidding, our university successfully won the wind tunnel test project of the bridge. After arduous trails for more than four months, the wind tunnel test of the full-bridge aeroelastic model of the 1915 Canakkale Bridge in Turkey was successfully completed at the Wind Engineering Experimental Research Center.

At 9:30 am on September 11th, Turhan, the Turkeys Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Iskut, the Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure , Uralunu, the Director of Transport and Highway Administration, and building contractor and engineering team for the bridge arrived at the university. The welcoming ceremony was presided by the Vice President He Chuan and attended by Xu Fei , the university President, Liao Haili, the Director of the Wind Engineering Experimental Center, and the heads of the Civil Engineering School and relevant departments.

Mr. Turkhan said in his speech that Turkey will build the longest suspension bridge in the world and ensure that it will be opened to traffic in 2023, the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of Turkey. He is very happy to see that the wind tunnel test project can be carried out in the XNJD-3 wind tunnel of the Southwest Jiaotong University, the first engineering institute in China. In particular, this wind tunnel is currently the world''s largest boundary layer wind tunnel. He thanked the Wind Engineering Test Center for providing many suggestions on the construction of the bridge. "It is believed that the 1915 Canakkale Bridge will become the cooperation bridge between us. We look forward to more cooperation between the two countries, and welcome more Chinese companies to participate in Turkish investment projects." He also expected more visiting exchanges between Chinese and Turkish students.

At the ceremony, on behalf of the university, Xu Fei presented the Shu Embroidery as a commemoration to Mr. Turkhan. The representatives of the two sides took a group photo in front of the Canakkale Bridge model.

Then, Mr. Yamazaki, General Manager of the Bridge Design Department, introduced the technical design of the Canakkale Bridge. Finally, all the guests inspected the wind tunnel test of the full bridge aeroelastic model of the Canakkale Bridge.

Wind Engineering Experimental Research Center in Southwest Jiaotong university, established in 1989, is the earliest institute of wind engineering research in China. After nearly 30 years of development and construction, it has become a well-known wind engineering research institution at home and abroad, with its own characteristics and advantages in the research on bridge wind engineering. It is also an important component of the National Engineering Laboratory for Land Traffic Geological Hazard Prevention and Control Technology. The XNJD-3 wind tunnel for the wind tunnel test of the 1915 Canakkale Bridge is the world''s largest boundary layer wind tunnel. In recent years, it has completed wind tunnel tests on more than 100 bridges at home and abroad, including 5 of the world''s longest 10 suspension bridges and 4 of the longest 10 cable-stayed bridges.
